The Annual Purple Run is an exciting collaboration between the University of Michigan Police Department, the Ann Arbor Police Department, the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office, and SafeHouse Center to bring our community together while highlighting the prevalence of Domestic Violence. In Washtenaw County, law enforcement and advocates work very closely with one another and, whether it is on active cases or community events, we are actively engaged in protecting and safe-guarding the public.
The University of Michigan Police Department
The University of Michigan Police Department (UMPD) is a full-service law enforcement agency. Police officers have the authority to investigate, search, arrest and use reasonable force as necessary to protect persons and property and to enforce the laws of the State of Michigan and the Ordinance of the Regents of the University of Michigan. University Police Officers patrol all campus buildings and grounds 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Specialized police services include: criminal investigations, accident investigations, evidence technicians, mountain bike patrol, motorcycle, tactical operations, K9 teams, computer forensics, special problems and community outreach teams. UMPD also has a Special Victims Unit (SVU) who deals specifically with domestic violence and plays an integral role in the Purple Run. The SVU team takes a victim-centered, trauma-informed, and offender-focused approach to their work. When reporting to law enforcement, survivors are treated with compassion and respect.
The Ann Arbor Police Department
There are 122 sworn police officers included in the overall staff of 156. The AAPD is a full-service department with many services and divisions. These include a detective section, Special Victims Unit (SVU), traffic services unit, K9, motorcycle and bicycle patrols, as well as a community engagement unit that includes many programs and opportunities to volunteer and get involved. The SVU deals with domestic violence and is a community partner with the Purple Run. The AAPD road patrol is committed to a community-oriented policing philosophy and strives for a high level of community engagement. The AAPD is among 12 agencies in Michigan that are currently CALEA accredited.
Washtenaw County Prosecuting Attorney's Office
The Washtenaw County Prosecuting Attorney's Office is responsible for all felonies and misdemeanors charged under state law, as well as juvenile delinquency proceedings, terminations of parental rights for abuse and neglect of children, and mental health commitments. The Prosecutors' Office mission is to protect the rights, safety and security of all persons within the boundaries of the County through fair enforcement of state laws mandated by the State Constitution and Statutes. A special unit in the office is devoted to the prosecution of Domestic Violence and Criminal Sexual Conduct, and members of this team play a key role in the organization of the Purple Run.
SafeHouse Center
The proceeds raised during this 5k fun run benefit SafeHouse Center, which is an organization within Washtenaw County that is working to build a community free of domestic violence and sexual assault. SafeHouse Center provides support for those impacted by domestic violence or sexual assault by providing free and confidential services for any person victimized that lives or works in Washtenaw County. Their services include emergency shelter for those in danger of being hurt or killed, counseling, legal advocacy, support groups, and especially, hope.
The Purple Run is much more than a fundraiser. Our goal is to raise awareness about Domestic Violence and to help the community recognize this issue affects all of us. There is strength in numbers, and we are so excited that you want to join us and make a statement to survivors that there is support in our community.
Every 60 seconds, 20 people are subject to inter-partner violence.
Let’s work together to bring this number down!
We’re running domestic violence out of town.
